(Reuters) - Florida's Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a bill into law that bans most abortions after six weeks, setting the stage for abortion access to be drastically curtailed in the state and across the U.S. South.
DeSantis signed the legislation late on Thursday night after lawmakers in the state's Republican-led House of Representatives approved it with a 70-40 vote. The bill passed the state Senate by a vote of 26-13 on April 3.
The celebrated director is known for his liberal use of violence and strong language in his movies, and for the occasional scene in which a woman shows her bare feet. However, Tarantino's movies tend to not have many sex scenes, with the exceptions of "Jackie Brown" and "Inglourious Basterds."
When asked about this during an interview with the Catalan publication Diari Ara, the "Pulp Fiction" director responded (via Variety): "It's true, sex is not part of my vision of cinema. And the truth is that, in real life, it's a pain to shoot sex scenes, everyone is very tense."
"If it was already a bit problematic to do it before, now it is even more so. If there had ever been a sex scene that was essential to the story, I would have, but so far it hasn't been necessary," Tarantino added.
In response, Twitter users were quick to make jokes about scenes in Tarantino's movies often lingering on women's feet.
"but these were necessary?" wrote one person alongside a photo of Margot Robbie's feet in "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood."
In 2020, after Brad Pitt won best supporting actor at the SAG Awards for his role in "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood," the actor also poked fun at Tarantino's penchant for filming feet.
"I want to thank my costars, Leo, Margot Robbie, Margot Robbie's feet, Margaret Qualley's feet, Dakota Fanning's feet," said Pitt, referring to the fact that all three actors bared their feet in the movie.
Pitt added: "Seriously, Quentin has separated more women from their shoes than the TSA."
In 2019, the movie's cinematographer Robert Richardson spoke to Insider about the focus on feet, saying: "I'm used to it. It's not like they are scripted. It's more Quentin just reacting: 'This is what I want to shoot now and let's start there and come to here.' That's it."
In 2021, Tarantino finally addressed the prevalence of bare feet in his movies in an interview with GQ.
"We are proud to support life and family in the state of Florida," DeSantis said in a statement.
The legislation makes exceptions for abortions in cases of rape, incest and when the mother's life or health are at serious risk.
Backing more severe restrictions could carry political risks for DeSantis, who is expected to seek the Republican nomination for president in 2024.
Abortion has emerged as a potent political issue in the U.S. since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year, with polls showing that support for abortion rights helped Democrats outperform Republicans in November's midterm elections.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll completed on Wednesday found that about 50% of Americans strongly or somewhat oppose a national six-week abortion ban, including 44% of Republicans. The same poll showed that 43% of Republicans said they were less likely to vote for a politician who supports limiting access to abortion.
"The ban flies in the face of fundamental freedoms and is out of step with the views of the vast majority of the people of Florida and of all the United States," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.
Debate over the Florida measure lasted several hours on Thursday. Republican supporters of the bill said the law safeguarded women's health by making exceptions for dangerous pregnancies, and insisted doctors should not hesitate to perform life-saving abortions as the law allows.
"We have the opportunity to lead the national debate about the importance of protecting life and giving every child the opportunity to be born," said Republican Representative Jenna Persons-Mulicka, a sponsor of the bill
The first weekend of Coachella is upon us (April 14th - 16th, for those who ~celebrate~). If you still haven't picked out what you're going to wear, celebs like Alix Earle who practically run the music festival circuit have been coming in clutch with some fire outfit inspo.
Alix gave us a sneak peek of her Ultra Miami Day 2 outfit on TikTok — a glitter bikini with body chains, body glitter, and face gems — before admitting that she didn't make it to Ultra Day 3. Two weeks later, the TikToker finally dropped the rest of her outfit photos on Instagram ( "Just now recovered enough to post an IG from Ultra 👍🏼," she joked in the caption) and let's just say that alllllll the style ideas you could possibly want for Coachella have arrived. Ty, Alix!
The makeup guru held nothing back in a totally sheer bodysuit with flared sleeves, shoulder cutouts, and "X"-shaped nipple covers. She hopped on the no-pants trend and swapped her bottoms in favor of a pair of chunky dad sneakers with silver lace-ups, as well as matching silver face gems and a lavender scrunchie to secure her high ponytail. "Now to Coachella," Alix declared in the comments.
While Ultra is specifically for EDM and Coachella covers more music genres, people tend to wear similar festival-y outfits to both. Think flowy sleeves, see-through knits, face jewels, beachy waves, and comfy shoes (go for sneakers, platforms, or sandals that you can wear all day long).
If you're totes obsessed with Alix's look but want to modify it to your comfort level, try pairing a similar lavender knit with a denim mini skirt, low-rise BF jeans, and baggy cargo pants. Shop our favorite lookalikes below.
The miniskirt has become a staple in many women’s wardrobes. Nowadays, It’s normal to see the silhouette on the runway or casually worn on the streets, no matter the season. However, the miniskirt wasn’t always such an everyday fashion piece.
It's hard to craft a superhero story without someone to save. The heroes in the DC Universe are heroic thanks to the civilians they always rescue, but there is a deeper emotional connection for readers to tap into if the character that has been held hostage means something to the hero themselves.
RELATED: 10 DC Villains With Inconsistent Powers
Thus, some characters were originally designed purely as hostages. Although their role would evolve far beyond this initial placement, the time period figures like Lois Lane and Jim Gordon were created in meant that they were largely two-dimensional. In the years since, they have been captured numerous times, but thankfully they also contribute a lot to the overall narrative and have proven their value.
Dick Grayson
While Dick Grayson was first introduced as a sidekick for Batman, so that the Caped Crusader could pass on some of his knowledge, Robin also served another role. The character was captured consistently, with each succeeding Robin fulfilling a similar purpose: to require a rescue from Batman.
Of course, the stakes were always raised because of the father-and-son relationship Bruce and Dick had developed. With an inspirational parental figure leading the way, Grayson eventually grew out of the role and needed to move out of Batman's shadow to build a legacy of his own.
Lois Lane
Lois Lane is a talented journalist and the most famous love interest in Clark Kent's life. Although the character has evolved greatly since her early days, in a rather sexist manner she was brought into comic lore to be the damsel in distress. It was quite a commonality for the time period, for the female character to serve in this role.
However, her position as a journalist and one of DC's most intelligent characters, meant that her purpose was two-fold. Not only would she be captured, but she would naturally be an easy target due to the research she was undertaking for her columns. Her job gave writers the perfect excuse to keep putting her in danger while showing the world what a great hero Superman was.
Jimmy Olsen
Superman's best friend is Jimmy Olsen. It could have been pretty boring for only one character to be kidnaped in every story and thus Olsen served as an alternative choice for the writer to utilize. The character was a photographer and thus had a similarly easy explanation for being in harm's way.
RELATED: 10 Great DC Comics That Were Set Up To Fail
It was always a simple task to create sympathy for the character, considering he was very much portrayed as the audience's point of view. He was the everyman that just happened to be friends with a Kryptonian, and that innocence made him a compelling supporting character in his own right.
Iris West
Just like Lois Lane, Iris West acted as the damsel in distress for Barry Allen. Although the character was also created as a love interest, she was captured on numerous occasions in her earlier appearances, in scenarios that only the fastest man alive could handle.
Iris West has had multiple portrayals since that time, from a journalist to a member of Team Flash and even a talented mechanic. She has pushed past the stereotypes that were first attached to the character, although there are still narratives involving her disappearance or capture on both the page and the small screen.
Christopher Chance
Interestingly, Christopher Chance was designed to be a hostage for other heroes. The Human Target was just that: a target for the villains and assassins that might be looking to take out some of DC's most prominent characters. Chance would throw himself into danger, masquerading as others so that they could get to safety.
His whole purpose is to be shot at, take the hits and escape the kidnapping situation. While some of his heroic sacrifices have been undermined, years of experience have taught Human Target how to best trick his captors into believing he's the real deal.
Steve Trevor
In a slight change of the status quo, for Wonder Woman's narratives, she required a damsel in distress just as the likes of Batman or Flash did. The human, soldier, and intelligence operative Steve Trevor couldn't compare to the villains Diana would have to face, despite his impressive skills.
RELATED: 15 DC Teams Built Around Magic
So although Trevor was also placed as a sidekick for Wonder Woman in battle, his primary purpose across notable arcs saw the character held hostage. His elite training might have prepared him for the occasion, but it would only be Diana Prince that could save him each time.
Vicki Vale
Batman had Robin to save, but to keep the stories varied another character was required to raise the stakes. Vicki Vale, like so many similar characters before her, was both a love interest and a damsel in distress for Bruce Wayne. Unlike her comic counterparts, Vicki Vale lacked the knowledge of Bruce's alter ego, placing her further from most core stories.
What set Vale apart though was her role as a reporter. She could be on the front lines, giving access to the Caped Crusader to all of Gotham as she tracked his pursuits. Of course, this would put her in danger and thus her position as a hostage was easily explained.
“Whoever said orange is the new pink was seriously disturbed” — Reese Witherspoon designing her new swimwear collection, probably.
Her Nashville-based brand Draper James has just released its first-ever swim line and the Legally Blonde influence is palpable. Though the brand’s style is decidedly southern-sweet, this summertime capsule collection is embellished with design details you’d associate with Witherspoon’s fashion-savvy on-screen persona, Elle Woods. Playful prints, femme ruffles, and vivid candy colors elevate the simple silhouettes.
Available to shop now (just in time for Memorial Day weekend), fans can peruse one and two-piece styles ranging from high-rise bikinis to all-coverage rash guards to 2000s-era tankinis — plus, coordinating cover-ups and sunnies to match.

NEAR BAKHMUT, Ukraine (Reuters) -A Russian missile strike killed eight people in eastern Ukraine on Friday as a British assessment said Ukrainian troops had been forced to withdraw from parts of the city of Bakhmut, the focus of Moscow's slow advance through the region. Ukrainian troops have been doggedly defending Bakhmut, shattered after months of shelling and bombardment. Ukrainian military commanders this week rejected as exaggerated Russian statements that its forces now controlled 80% of the city.
In Sloviansk, a city west of Bakhmut that Russia is seeking to capture, missile strikes on apartment buildings and other targets killed eight people and injured 21, regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko told national television. He said seven missiles had been fired.
Two top floors collapsed in one building and rescuers searched for survivors into the night, pulling one woman in her seventies alive from the rubble. A child died on the way to a hospital after being rescued, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's office.
"The evil state once again demonstrates its essence," Zelenskiy wrote on Telegram in a post accompanied by footage of the damaged building. "Just killing people in broad daylight. Ruining, destroying all life."
The strike was one of a long series of attacks to hit civilian areas in the war, now just over a year old. Russia has repeatedly said it does not target civilian sites.
RE-ENERGISED ASSAULT ON BAKHMUT
The assessment by Britain's military said Russia had been pouring in new resources in a bid to capture Bakhmut, seen by Moscow as a stepping stone to capturing more territory in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region, a major war aim.
Western countries have in the past pointed to acrimony between the Russian defence ministry (MoD) and the country's main mercenary force Wagner as a significant Russian weakness.

An ex-student who was convicted of threatening behaviour for throwing eggs at King Charles III during a walkabout was seen beaming as he walked free from court today. Patrick Thelwell shouted “the King is a paedophile” after throwing after throwing “at least five eggs” towards the monarch in York last year. The 23-year-old had pleased not guilty to a Section 4 public order offence, saying he used “low level violence” in a “lawful” manner as it was self defence against “the violence carried out by the British state”. The judge sentenced Thelwell to a 12-month community order with 100 hours of unpaid work for the “unprovoked, targeted and pre-planned use of violence against what was, after all, a 74-year-old man”. Speaking outside York Magistrates’ Court, Thelwell declared with glee that he was “off for a pint” after defending his actions. He told reporters: “I think it’s frightening that billions of people are going to die on this planet because of climate breakdown. “People are dying right now, which is really serious. If my actions scare people then maybe it can inspire them to think about what is really scaring us. “We’re sleepwalking into a fascist state and if we don’t do something about it, they’re going to start locking us up in camps and killing us.” Of possible concern to the Pentagon, a “supercavitaing” torpedo has increased speed to attack surface ships and submarines on the move at great distances, with the ability to maneuver and achieve precision. (Subscribe to 19FortyFive's New YouTube Channel here.) Both Iran and Russia reportedly operate supercavitating torpedoes, according to their own press reports. MORE: Lauren Boebert Won’t Last Much Longer MORE: Kamala Harris Is Now Facing The Unthinkable MORE: Joe Biden Just Made Another Embarrassing Mistake MORE: Joe Biden And Kamala Harris Won’t Run In 2024: Expert MORE: ‘You Really Oughta Go Home’: F-22 Raptor Stealth Fighter Flew Under F-4 From Iran Russia's VA-111 Shkval is a supercavitating torpedo reported by Russian press to achieve speed of 230 miles per hour, a speed more than four times speeds listed for most legacy torpedoes which travel anywhere from 28 to 48 Mph. The speed differential, therefore, is massive and therefore something likely to increase the risks posed to major US Navy surface ships and submarines seeking to elude detection. An essay from militaryperiscope.com, for instance, specifies this enormous margin of difference. “The Shkval is fired from the standard 533-mm torpedo tube at a depth of up to 328 ft (100 m). The rocket-powered torpedo exits the tube at 50 knots (93 kmh) and then ignites the rocket motor, propelling the weapon to speeds four to five times faster than other conventional torpedoes,” the essay states. Given this difference, the technological leap forward woven into supercavitating torpedoes indeed sounds extremely significant, such that one might wonder just how this might be achieved. Clearly the propulsion system appears to involve paradigm-changing innovations, as described by the militaryperiscope.com essay. The torpedo is propelled by a solid rocket capable of achieving speeds of 230 Mph by, as the essay describes, “producing an envelope of supercavitating bubbles from its nose and skin which coat the entire weapon with a surface in a thin layer of gas. This causes the metal skin of the weapon to avoid contact with the water, significantly reducing drag and friction.” The Shkval’s range is concerning as well, as it is listed at 7,000 meters, which amounts for more than 4 miles, creating a distance and speed of attack likely to massively change the threat equation for US Navy submarines and ships. Unless, of course, the submarines launching the torpedoes were seen and destroyed before being in position to fire or simply unable to detect ultra “quiet” US Navy attack and ballistic missile submarines. “Supercavitation,” as it is called, is enabled by this “gas cavity” kept stable by a conical disk. “The cavity is supported by rockets venting just above the cavitator. Four popout cylinders toward the aft end of the nose section keep the body of the torpedo stable and out of contact with the walls of the bubble in which it rides. At the rear of the torpedo are deflected control surfaces. Eight small rockets surround the main sustainer rocket. The main engine cuts in when the weapon has achieved supercavitation speed,” militaryperiscope.com states. Also, as if Russian supercavitating torpedoes were not themselves generating sufficient concern, the Pentagon has likely noticed Iranian reports that its navy too has such a weapon. A report from Forbes years ago explains how Iran test-fired its “Hoot” supercavitating torpedo in the Strait of Hormuz in 2017. However, before anyone rushes to a premature panic, there are some things to consider when it comes to supercavitating torpedoes, such as complexities regarding its “guidance” technology and very noticeable noise. Specifics are provided in an interesting web post from a former US Navy officer who writes: “Moving so fast, the SC torpedo is blind. It must simply travel its initial course, trusting its INS. But, since it is so fast, targets generally don't get to move so far in its travel time. But, this is a pretty bad limitation (except for nuclear warheads)......The SC torpedo can communicate to the launching platform via a thin wire trailing from the torpedo to the launching submarine. This can allow the submarine to guide the ‘blind’ torpedo to its target. But, the wires can break. And the torpedo itself creates a problem. It is so noisy, it can mask the ability of the launching submarine to even detect the target." Also, one is quite likely to wonder if the US Navy itself has a supercavitating torpedo. The answer is unclear. While some open source reports claim they exist, others say they have not been deployed if they do exist, so there simply is not enough reliable information to confirm one way or the other. The defendant, whom said he had now given up his studies, has been ordered to pay £600 court costs and £114 surcharge at a rate of £5 a week. Thelwell defended himself at the trial, and was stopped by the judge from asking a police witness whether he “was aware the King was photographed numerous times with Jimmy Savile”, in a reference to the disgraced TV presenter. Judge Goldspring told him: “Whether or not the King was photographed with Jimmy Savile has no relevance to this trial at all. “I’m afraid I won’t allow you to ask questions about your perception of the King’s past.” The defendant also asked Detective Constable Peter Wilson if he felt throwing eggs at people “is more or less serious than the violence carried out by the British state”. Police Constable Adam Steventon, who arrested Thelwell, told the court he was standing about 10 yards away when he “became aware of a commotion”. The officer said he saw one of the eggs being thrown and climbed over the barrier to detain Thelwell, who was being restrained by plain-clothed police officers and members of the public. “I recall him shouting several times, ‘f*** the King’. I believe he shouted ‘the King is a paedophile’ or words very close to that,” PC Steventon told the court. Looking over his balcony and taking in the view, Nicholson wore sweats, an orange shirt, and socks while rocking his undone gray hair and facial scruff. Chapters Ancient Romans, who had under their control, huge tracts of land certainly had to deal with the black population on a daily basis. Interestingly, the ratio of the white to the black race was not always beneficial only for the former. According to the fathers of the church Jerome and Sophronius of Jerusalem, at the end of the 4th century CE, Colchis was called the “second Ethiopia” due to the overwhelming number of black people. Other sources from the 4th century BCE, in the form of Palaephatus and Hanno the Navigator (Carthaginian sailor), mention the village of Cerne, located behind the Pillars of Hercules (Columnae Herculis), which closes the Mediterranean Sea and meant for the ancient end of the known world. The city was inhabited according to the ancients by Ethiopians, who traded in ivory, deer, leopards, wine, perfumes, Egyptian stones, and ceramics from Athens. The proof of the fact that the black inhabitants lived in Rome is evidenced by the event of 61 CE when the Roman emperor Nero organized an amphitheatre spectacle of hunting Ethiopian hunters. What is worth mentioning, is that black people were not slaves and servants in the Roman world. Some of them became writers, chiefs, and philosophers, and according to the Byzantine chronicler John Malalas, even emperor Septimius Severus had dark skin, though it does not seem to be black; he sooner had a Berber origin and was the first emperor from Africa (he was born in Libya). As for the slaves, even the blacks were liberated and became prominent citizens of Rome. It is possible that a slave of Cicero had black skin – Marcus Tullius Tiro, who was liberated for good service. He was a friend and secretary of a well-known speaker, and also the author of his unseen biography. Keeping Cicero’s notes he used the so-called notae Tironianae, which was the first form of shorthand. He died probably at the age of 99. Another famous figure from the Roman world, which was of African origin, was Lucius Quietus. He was a Roman officer and legate of Judea in 117 CE who was of Moroccan origin and was the son of a tribal chief. Lucius’ father and his warriors supported the Roman legions in their efforts to pacify the Roman province Tingitana Mauritania during the Aedemon revolt in the 40s of the 1st century CE. Being a useful ally in that area, he was honoured with the award of Roman citizenship. Lucius served as an auxiliary officer in a Roman cavalry, recruited from free Moorish tribes. In time, he became a senator and became the legate of Judea. Chapters During the time of the Republic, Roman citizens had the right (libertas) to protect their bodies from physical coercion, including both corporal punishment and sexual violence. Roman society was typically patriarchal and masculinity was based on the principle of governing not only oneself but also other persons, especially those from the lower class. It was socially acceptable for a free-born Roman to have sex with a woman or a man assuming a dominant role. Both women and young men were perceived as natural objects of desire. Outside of marriage, a man could have sex with slaves (or slaves), prostitutes (who were usually slaves) and the so-called infames (the restricted man). It did not matter with which gender the Roman indulged in until he did not exceed certain social norms. For example, it was immoral to have sex with another citizen’s free-born wife, his daughter by marriage, his underage son, or the man himself. During imperial times, the fear of losing political freedom and submitting to power to the emperor led to an increase in the frequency of free-born men assuming a passive position during sex. This is evidenced by the sources that mention a greater number of executions and corporal punishment imposed on free citizens of Rome. Generally speaking, in civilian life, homosexuality was rather rare and treated reluctantly (as evidenced by references in source texts, which noted outrageous, characteristic and infrequent things), and such relations were tolerated, as I mentioned if the Roman citizen was an active party (in otherwise, Roman blood was contaminated. It is worth presenting a controversial excerpt from Caesar’s life. In 80 BCE a young Gaius Julius Caesar arrived at the court of Nicomedes IV, king of Bithynia (North-West Asia Minor), Caesar was sent there on the orders of praetor Marcus Minucius Termus from Asia to get the Bithynian fleet to help with the siege of the city of Mytilene on the island of Lesbos. even closer to befriending the king. It has often been suggested – probably rightly – that they were lovers. From this it can be inferred that Caesar was bisexual, in the late period known for his high-profile romances with numerous women; bisexuality was common among the Roman aristocracy at that time. The episode in Bithynia was repeatedly the subject of satirical comments, but it did not affect Caesar’s political career. The attack on Caesar resulted from the fact that was supposed to be a passive party during intercourse. So if any high-ranking free-born Roman allowed himself to be passive during intercourse, he risked mockery. Their victim was, among others Mark Antony, who had a long relationship with Publius Clodius. Cicero ridiculed this account in fourteen malicious Philipics, mentioning, inter alia, the escape of the future triumvir over the roofs from the angry father of his lover. Cicero had to pay his head for this mockery – when Marcus Antony came to power, he ordered his head to be cut off with a blunt knife, and the triumvir’s wife Fulwia additionally pierced the orator’s tongue with a nail. Loud – because very unusual – was also the relationship between Marcus Antony and his peer, Scribonia Kourion. The lovers were not separated by the age difference, and they indulged in sex so passionately that Scriboni’s father placed his son under house arrest. It was to no avail, Marcus Antony broke in, because through the roof, only to satisfy the need to meet his lover. Not only Marcus Antony was famous for male lovers. Emperor Vitellius always prepared an exclusive menu for his young lovers, aimed at stimulating the imagination and potency: wild boar liver, pheasant brain, flamingo tongues and dandelion moray. Known for his extremely audacious – not only sexual – practitioners of Caligula his first official lover Lepidus married his sister (with whom he also remained in an active relationship erotic). However, Lepidus joined a group of conspirators who planned to deprive the emperor of power, for which he sentenced him to be beheaded. He then anointed Valenius Catullus as his official lover, who – whether out of his innate bragging rights or to lick his ruler – bragged all over the city that he was insanely sore after making love with Caligula. However, Caligula, with the consistent characteristic of the mentally ill, although he himself is strongly bisexual, ordered all homosexuals to be sent to hard labour in Sardinia one day. A man or boy who had a passive role in sex was defined in various ways: cinaedus (derogatory term for a deviant), pathicus (“dumbass”), exoletus, concubinus (“male concubin”), spintria, puer (“boy”), pullus (“chick”), pusio, delicatus (especially the phrase puer delicatus, meaning “filigree boy” was used), mollis (“soft”), tener (“gentle”), debilis (“weak” or “disabled”), effeminatus, discinctus (“scantily clad”), morbosus (“sick”). Despite the fact that the Romans viewed marriage as a heterosexual relationship for procreation, in the early Empire, some homosexual couples managed to get married in the company of friends. Marcjalis and Juwenalis mention such weddings. Roman law naturally did not recognize such a relationship as legally binding, but Juvenal in one of his satires notes that publicizing such events could eventually legalize them. Some historical sources say that Emperor Nero was married three times: twice as a bride (with the liberated Pythagoras and with an unknown person), and the third as the groom (with Sporus). Sporus was a Roman boy who liked Emperor Nero because he reminded him of his late wife Poppaea Sabina. Nero ordered Sporus to be castrated and in the fall of 66 CE, during the emperor’s journey through Greece, he married him. No sources say whether Sporus reciprocated Nero’s feelings. Wedding ceremonies reportedly included dowry and the wearing of a wedding veil. Despite the fact that Roman sources were hostile to the issue of Nero’s marriages, Cassius Dio mentions that society saw the emperor’s artistic performances as worse than weddings. Generally, any coercion or rape was severely punished under Roman law. The first lex dates back to the 2nd century BCE and applies to both same-sex and bisexual acts. The law applied to free people as well as the so-called infamis or suspiciosus – a term for people with lower status and rights. Lex Julia de vi publica, a law adopted in the 3rd century CE but dating back to the times of Julius Caesar’s dictatorship, unequivocally defines rape as a forced rapprochement on “a boy, woman and anyone “. The punishment that Lex provided was the death penalty. In turn, sex with a slave of another citizen was considered a form of theft or illegal appropriation of property. Seneca the Elder cites a hypothetical case of a teenager (adulescens) being raped by his 10 peers. The writer and scholar, however, emphasize the effectiveness of Rome’s legislative bodies and the possibility of enforcing legal norms. Another crime is the rape of a free Roman citizen (ingenuus), which led a disgraced Roman to suicide. Such a crime was considered one of the worst crimes that could be committed alongside patricide, rape of a virgin and sacking of a temple. The lack of self-control, especially in managing his own sex life, indicated that the man was unable to properly control other people. In turn, succumbing to a too-low level of pleasure threatened to erode a citizen’s personal culture. A Roman soldier, like every free and self-respecting Roman, was socially obligated to discipline, also in matters of sexuality. In the Roman military of the Republic period, any manifestations of homosexuality were severely exterminated. The “active” person most often exposed himself to flogging and expulsion from the legions, while the “passive” person was sentenced to death – according to Polybius by beating (fustuarium). Emperor Octavian Augustus (27 BCE – 14 CE) introduced a legionary marriage ban – a law that was in force for almost two centuries. In return, the soldiers could enjoy prostitutes of both sexes, slaves, prisoners and homosexual sex. The work “On the Spanish War” describes the events of a front in Spain where an officer had a male concubine (concubinus) during the campaign. Sex between the soldiers disturbed the order and moral framework of camp life. In the simplest terms, a man retained his masculinity until he was forced into the act. The aspect of homosexuality cannot be ruled out with certainty among the legionaries, who spent a great deal of time in their company. Naturally, there were cases of using the power and dominant position of superiors over privates. Such behaviour is also mentioned in Plutarch in “The Parallel Lives” in the part devoted to Gaius Marius. References to lesbian love in the literature of the Republic and Empire are extremely rare. There are small mentions in the works of Ovid, who advocates for heterosexual love, and in the writer Lucian of Samosata (2nd century CE). In Pompeii, wall frescoes depicting a couple of women during the act and graffiti emphasizing same-sex desire have been found. In Rome, various terms were used for lesbian: hetairistria, tribas, lesbia, tribas, fricatrix and virago. Lesbian love was unacceptable because it was read as a usurpation by one of the women of the role of a man, which was an attack on the social structure. According to the Romans, the necessary attribute for sexual intercourse was the phallus, which lesbians had to replace with accessories in the form of today’s dildos. Moreover, the Romans emphasized that during a love affair between two women, only one could feel pleasure. It was also emphasized that lesbians were distinguished by larger genitalia. Many Romans of African descent, like Quietus, reached the high levels of their military career and were stationed away from their home sites. Many officers and soldiers served, for example, in the 3rd century CE next to Hadrian’s wall. A certain inscription proves that the auxiliary unit Numerus Maurorum Aurelianorum served in Aballava (today’s Burgh-by-Sands in England). The unit was completely recruited from the Mauritanian population. Excavations from the period 1951-1959 proved that among the exhumed skeletons in Britain, some were of African origin. What is worth emphasizing is the aforementioned emperor Septimius Severus who legalized marriages between soldiers and local women. In this way, children from mixed couples were born. Historian Anthony Birley in his book “Septimius Severus: The African Emperor” explains that between 193 and 211 CE the Roman Empire was a multicultural mix of people from Syria, Germania, Britain, Spain and Africa. In addition, he claims that at that time eight men of African origin commanded Roman legions in the north, and others were equites. Seneca the Younger claimed that people with black complexion were not a surprise in Rome. Romans were not racists at all; they did not judge by their skin colour, but rather by their origin. The Romans used the general term for black inhabitants, describing them as “Ethiopians”. The Ethiopians had their own state – the Kingdom of Aksum – which in the first century BCE experienced its “golden period”. Goods were transported from the port of Adulis to the Mediterranean, as well as to India and Ceylon. The Romans maintained commercial contact with the Ethiopians. Thanks to the fact that the residents of Aksum certainly had a black skin colour, hence the general term for all black people in the Empire. Map of the Roman Empire from 211 CE. For sure the Roman state had to be multicultural. It's been 18 months since Nicholson has been spotted in public, adding to the ongoing speculation that his health is declining. Back in 2018, sources told RadarOnline.com the 12-time Academy Award nominee was stepping away from acting roles due to his memory loss. A source said at the time, "There is a simple reason behind his decision — it's memory loss. Jack has memory issues and can no longer remember the lines being asked of him." As with any documentary, it's worth asking what's accurate and what's not. In the case of "Killer Sally," the series omits some important details, both about McNeil's life and about the killing itself. These details could have potentially cast her in a different light. Love Is Blind fans, please prepare yourself for some rather shocking news. The creator of the series, Chris Coelen, has revealed there was not one, but two, more engagements that happened in the pods in season four but we never got to see them. Coelen told People season four cast members Jimmy Forde and Wendi Kong, and Josh "JP" Schultz and Ava Van Jenson got engaged during their time in the pods. 29-year-old Jimmy and 28-year-old Wendy were said to have bonded over their shared interests and similar career paths, with the pair both working in engineering. Jimmy and Wendi continued to date after the experiment, however they broke up around three months later with Wendi deciding to end their relationship because they had "different perspectives" on dating. The pair are said to be on good terms. The second pair to get engaged in the pods were 30-year-old JP and 32-year-old Ava. JP was said to be initially getting to know Ava, Chelsea and Micah, however after Chelsea and Micah decided to pursue things with Kwame and Paul, JP reportedly focused all his attention on Ava. The couple got engaged, however shortly after leaving the experiment, JP reportedly ended their relationship over text, saying he wanted to take things slower and date. Ava reportedly saw this as the end of their relationship. Since the news of their engagement was released Ava has taken to Instagram Stories to suggest it didn’t work out between the pair, hinting at the “shock” and hurt she was left feeling from their relationship. She added, “I am so sorry to let my family and friends down who are now finally hearing about the news. Please know I will share my side of the story when I am able to do so." Ava also explained she is currently prioritising her mental health. Chris Coelen has since explained why the two couples' journeys weren't included in the final cut of the show, saying they're always looking to show the most "authentic" storylines in Love Is Blind. He added: "We may choose to follow some people for some part of the process and then not tell their story, or we may choose to follow certain people only through their reveal. It really just depends on the circumstances." Coelen pointed out in previously seasons there have been other couples who got engaged and even went on the couples' retreat, that then weren't included in the final edit of the show. He also said the couples that have got engaged over the years, but weren't shown on the series, usually break up pretty quickly after leaving the experiment. To be clear, director Nanette Burstein acknowledges that Sally McNeil isn't a perfect victim. At her trial, Sally claimed that Ray had repeatedly violently abused her and that she killed him in self-defense. The prosecution countered that it was murder, and pointed to Sally's own history of violence. "We want victims to be perfect, and often they're not and we get upset with them but Sally didn't shy away from that, and yet has maintained her innocence," Burstein told Newsweek. The biggest omission in the documentary is the DNA evidence -- or lack thereof. According to Sally McNeil's account of the killing, Ray was beating and choking her when she managed to retrieve her sawed-off shotgun to defend herself. However, the prosecution pointed out that none of Sally's DNA was found on Ray's body. This, they claimed, meant that Ray hadn't been abusing her and that she'd murdered him. Additionally, the documentary omits details about Sally's violent past. If you or someone you know is dealing with domestic abuse, you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1−800−799−7233. You can also find more information, resources, and support at their website. Ray and Sally McNeil met in the U.S. Marine Corps. Sally served for 11 years while also bodybuilding in Marine competitions, making it to the rank of sergeant. In the documentary, Sally explains that she left the Marines in 1993. The documentary mentions that Sally's service record handbook included many instances when she'd gotten in trouble, without specifying why. The handbook mentions anger issues, violent outbursts, and physical altercations. Ultimately, she was demoted and forbidden from re-enlisting, which led to her leaving the military in 1993. While "Killer Sally" does detail other violent incidents from Sally McNeil's post-Marine days, like the time when she was arrested for assaulting a mail carrier who'd slapped her son, John, it's not an exhaustive account. There are two incidents the documentary leaves out. In 1990, the National Physique Committee suspended Sally for one year after she assaulted a fellow bodybuilder she suspected of having an affair with Ray. In 1993, she was arrested for kicking a bouncer in the face after he asked her to stop dancing on tables, and then threatened to kill the arresting officers. Sally McNeil was convicted of second-degree murder in 1996. Despite several appeals, including an appeal to the Supreme Court (which the documentary also omits), she served her sentence at the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla, California. As the documentary explains, McNeil was granted parole on May 29, 2020. After leaving prison, she lived at a Veteran's Transition Center and worked at a warehouse. During this time she met Norfleet Stewart at a VTC support group. The two began dating and married in June 2022. McNeil and Stewart also purchased a house, and they reportedly live in Northern California. In the documentary, McNeil talks about missing out on more than 20 years of her life and wanting to make up for lost time. Her son John is happy that she's found someone who treats her well. McNeil also reportedly has good relationships with John and her daughter Shantina after years of not speaking. Standing at just 3.59 inches tall and weighing just 1.5 pounds, Pearl is now a Guinness World Record holder. The celebrity and her owner Vanesa Semler stopped by WESH 2 on Friday. Most previous record-holders have been Chihuahuas, except for Big Boss, who was a Yorkie. Pearl's little body is about the size of a dollar bill, and she could fit inside a baseball cap. She's smaller than a football and is just about the same size as the slinky dog from "Toy Story." Pearl lives right here in Central Florida. "What I love about Pearl is that she is always happy, always happy and she loves people," Pearl's owner, Vanessa Semler said. In the space of six months, five dogs would hold the title – and that run would end in a truly remarkable discovery at a farm on the Iberian peninsula. When Pebbles died, the question of the heir to the throne was fairly simple to answer. The Chihuahua from Florida who held the title before her was still alive. Named after the US country singer whose hits include Should’ve Been a Cowboy and Beer For My Horses, 21-year-old TobyKeith became the nominal world’s oldest living dog for the second time. His owner, Gisela Shore of Greenacres in sunny Palm Beach County, told Guinness World Records: ‘We adore him so much and achieving this record is a testimony of the loving home we have provided for him. ‘TobyKeith is such a blessing. I am so lucky to still have him in my life.’ She would not have known then that the wheels were already in motion at the records company’s HQ to unseat him yet again. The explosion of news about the death of Pebbles had led many owners around the world to wonder whether their old pup might be old on a global scale, and submissions were already being processed. ‘Whenever a record gets publicity we start to see an increase in applications,’ said Mark. ‘This has been no different.’ But first, a short word about ‘dog years’. The most familiar method of calculating a dog’s equivalent age to a human is to multiply their age by seven, a theory that would have Pebbles passing away at the eye-popping age of 154. However, many vets argue it’s better to take into account the significant maturing the animals go through in their first two years of puppyhood. A more accurate way of looking at things might be to say dogs age the equivalent of 21 human years by the time they turn two, and then add four years for each additional birthday. That approach would mean Pebbles died at the more realistic – albeit still impressive – human age of 101. But inevitably, there are extra complications, particularly in relation to the size and the breed. Numbers from the Journals of Gerantology, cited in the Wall Street Journal, say the first human year is equivalent to 10.9 years for a Miniature Poodle and 26.8 years for a Great Dane. According to research from the University of Melbourne, this may be down to the additional strain on the physiological processes of larger dogs. For those biological reasons, it tends to be small breeds that dominate the age-related records. TobyKeith was a Chihuahua, the smallest breed of them all. It was a Chihuahua mix that would take his place. Pearl belongs to Semler, a realtor who lives in Lake County, but Pearl's celebrity status takes Semler all over the world. The people at the Guinness Book of World Records recently took her to Milan, Italy, where Pearl stood next to a pair of designer shoes draped in bling. "She loved the attention. There were so many people taking photos, people showing her so much love and attention. She was absolutely amazed," Semler said. So what's Pearl like in real life? "Is she, like, a little diva?" WESH 2's Michelle Meredith asked. "She can tell you what she likes to wear every day. She choose(s) her clothes, her food," Semler said. "She's a character for someone so small." On the way out the door, it's customary for celebs to say hi to the hard-working staff in the newsroom, and our staff was smitten. Pearl left her faux fur-line carry case feeling loved and confident. The internet is head over heels for a viral pup who is a dead ringer for Snoopy, aka Charlie Brown’s pet dog from the iconic “Peanuts” cartoon strip. Bayley recently stole the hearts of pet lovers across social media with her fluffy white face, floppy black ears and round nose, which totally mirror those of the cartoon dog. The 1-year-old furry friend is a mini sheepadoodle, the offspring of an Old English sheepdog and a miniature poodle, according to her Instagram account. This week, Bayley garnered massive attention on social media after the Doodle Dogs Club Instagram account introduced her to its more than 230,000 followers. “Meet @Bayley.Sheepadoodle, the spitting image of Snoopy! With those big ears and that button nose, Bayley is the perfect real-life version of our favorite cartoon dog,” read a post on the account on Monday. The post had received more than 1 million likes as of Thursday. Though Bayley isn’t the same breed as Snoopy, who is famously a beagle, animal lovers across social media couldn’t help but gush over her. After Adesanya (23-2 MMA, 12-2 UFC) reclaimed his middleweight title with a knockout of Alex Pereira in the UFC 287 headliner last Saturday, former foe Blachowicz (29-9-1 MMA, 12-6-1 UFC) called him out. Blachowicz handed Adesanya his first-career loss when he stopped his attempt at becoming a two-weight champion in 2021 at UFC 259. Blachowicz has since lost his light heavyweight title, but now he wants to go after Adesanya’s 185-pound belt. Blachowicz has never fought at 185 pounds but assures he could make the weight. “People need to believe a little bit more in me,” Blachowicz said in an interview on “The Craic with Peter Carroll.” “And if UFC would like to make this fight, I will do it, no problem. I know how to do it. That will be great motivation for me, a big motivation, you know, to beat him another one, another time. So yeah, why not? I’m ready to do that.” He continued, “I find a way how to do it. And then, of course, how to do it and be in very good shape in the fight. If I wasn’t, I will not say that. But of course, I need a little bit more time. They have to give me like three, four months. Yes, 205 is easy for me. Three weeks like this, you know, but 84 (kgs), yeah, three months. It was also important that the Romans had sex with a man in some way socially inferior (younger, inferior, slave). In this way, the stereotype of a Roman, commander and conqueror was preserved. Homosexuality among men was tolerated and accepted but was definitely not the rule.
Roman dictator Lucius Sulla was not free from homosexuality, too, he always took with him, for every war and expedition, a host of his young lover.
In the 3rd century CE, Emperor Elagabalus was to stand on a wedding carpet as a bride with a Greek slave – Hierocles. Officially, their relationship naturally had no legal force. Hierocles became the emperor’s favourite when he fell from the chariot in front of the imperial lodge during the Games, and his helmet slipped off his head, revealing the face of the coachman. The teenage emperor was to be delighted with his beautiful blonde hair and he immediately ordered him to be brought to the palace, bestowing his favours. The emperor was to say then: “I am glad to be called the mistress, wife, queen of Hierocles.”Rape and regulation
