  • The "Da Vinci glow" phenomenon will be visible on the moon this week.

  • The ghostly gleam, also called "Earthshine," is reflected sunlight from Earth.

  • Here are the best days and times to see the "Da Vinci glow," according to Live Science.

This week a ghostly shine will appear on the moon, glowing on the edge of the lunar body. The phenomenon is known as the "Da Vinci glow," or "Earthshine."

Right now, the moon is a thin crescent, barely visible in the night sky. Thanks to the "Da Vinci glow," however, you can see the entire moon as a faint glimmer.

But this phenomenon is only visible during a precious time window shortly before sunrise and after sunset.

What causes Earthshine?

When the sun, Earth, and moon are positioned just right, sunlight bounces off all the snow, ice, and clouds on our planet to light up the dark side of the moon that we would otherwise be unable to see.

That's why the phenomenon is called Earthshine because it is the moon reflecting our light back to us.

Leonardo da Vinci documented this eerie gleam 500 years ago. The Da Vinci glow usually peaks in spring, as the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the sun, with snow and ice still covering the Arctic, according to NASA.

That makes Earth more reflective, which is why our planet is casting its glow onto the moon early this week and next weekend.

Earthshine has dimmed over the past two decades, however, due to rising global temperatures that are warming the Pacific Ocean and reducing low-lying cloud cover there, according to a 2021 study of measurements from the Big Bear Solar Observatory.

When to see the Da Vinci glow on the moon

The new moon on Friday will be practically invisible, lost in the sun's glare, so plan to catch the Da Vinci glow before or after that. The best time to see it varies by day.

If you're an early riser, you can spot the glow on the moon in the eastern sky during the hour before sunrise on Wednesday, according to Live Science.

If you miss this week's opportunity, however, you can still catch it, starting next weekend, when the moon will be waxing, aka growing, from a thin crescent toward a full moon.

In the hour after sunset in the western sky, here are the best days to catch the Da Vinci glow next weekend and into early next week:

  • Sunday, May 21: 5% of the moon will be visible as a slim crescent

  • Monday, May 22: 10% of the moon will be visible as the crescent fills in a little more

  • Tuesday, May 23: 17% of the moon will be visible, looking more like a nearly-devoured cookie

The phenomenon is best seen without equipment, but viewers can also watch the Da Vinci glow with some binoculars or a small telescope.

It looks cool from here, but basking in the glow of Earthshine on the moon itself would be a glorious experience.

"An astronaut standing on the moon after sunset would see a spectacular, fully lit Earth," according to NASA.

For now, we'll all have to be content with seeing the gleam of Earthshine from afar.

  • Earthshine

The glow is caused by sunlight reflecting off the Earth and on to the moon. In addition to being called the Da Vinci Glow, it is also called earthshine. Fun fact: If you’re standing on the moon, the Earth is 50 times brighter than the full moon appears from Earth, which means that the near side of the moon never experiences a very dark night.
  •  ANew Mexico teen was identified by police on Tuesday as the gunman who killed three senior citizens, in a "purely random" manner, before responding officers fatally shot him.

Beau Wilson, 18, was fatally shot by Farmington police who confronted him shortly after 11 a.m. MT on Monday, Deputy Police Chief Kyle Dowdy told reporters.

Wilson was a student at Farmington High School, which was set to hold graduation ceremonies Tuesday.

The three slain women were identified by police as Shirley Voita, 79, Melody Ivie, 73, and Gwendolyn Schofield, 97. Schofield was Ivie's mother.

"Shirley, Melody and Gwendolyn were valued members of our community and their untimely deaths have left a void that will never be filled," Deputy Chief Baric Crum said.

A doorbell camera captured what police believe were Wilson's first shots, fired at 10:56 a.m., a minute before Farmington police officers were dispatched to the neighborhood near Ute Street and Dustin Avenue, according to Dowdy.

The officers arrived at 11:02 a.m. to find Wilson opening fire, before the gunman was brought down at 11:06 a.m., police said.

"The suspect was shot and almost simultaneously as well, an officer was shot," Dowdy said.

The gunman appeared to fire at victims at random, as at least six houses and three cars were hit by gunfire, police said.

And so far police have not been able to make any connection between Wilson the three slain victims.

“It appears to be purely random and had no specific targets or motives that we can identify at this time," Dowdy said.

Two members of law enforcement, officers from the Farmington department and one from the state police, were injured but have been released from the hospital, according to Mayor Nate Duckett.

San Juan County Sheriff Shane Ferrari said his agency has been tasked with investigating the response of the police officer who fired 16 shots.

The teenager used at least three weapons, including what chief Steve Hebbe called an AR-style rifle.

A representative of Farmington Municipal Schools could not be immediately reached for comment on Tuesday.

The high school's commencement was set to happen at 7 p.m. MT on Tuesday.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Legal arguments over women's access to a drug used in the most common method of abortion move to a federal appeals court in New Orleans on Wednesday, in a case challenging a Food and Drug Administration decision made more than two decades ago.

The closely watched case is likely to wind up at the Supreme Court, which already has intervened to keep the drug, mifepristone, available while the legal fight winds through the courts.

Three 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals judges with a history of supporting abortion restrictions are set to hear arguments. At issue are the FDA's initial approval of mifepristone in 2000, and FDA actions making the drug more accessible in later years. The judges won't rule immediately.

Judges nominated to the district court and appeals court by former President Donald Trump are playing major roles in the case, which is being argued almost a year after the Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade ruling that had established abortion rights. Fourteen states have since banned abortion at all stages of pregnancy and other states have adopted, or are debating, major restrictions.

In November, abortion opponents in Texas filed a lawsuit in federal court in Amarillo, where U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, a Trump nominee, presides. Kacsmaryk issued a ruling on April 7 that would have revoked FDA approval of mifepristone in a Texas lawsuit brought by abortion opponents after the Supreme Court reversal of Roe v. Wade. The Biden administration and drug maker Danco Laboratories quickly appealed to the 5th Circuit, seeking a stay of Kacsmaryk's ruling.

An appellate panel voted 2-1 to narrow, but not completely block, Kacsmaryk's ruling. Their April 13 ruling said the abortion opponents appeared to be barred by time limits from challenging the initial 2000 approval. But the panel said the reimposed rules for physician visits and bars on mailing the drug could stay in place.

Later, the Supreme Court put the lower court rulings on hold pending appeals, almost certainly leaving access to mifepristone unchanged at least into next year.

For now, the case is in the hands of James Ho and Cory Wilson, both Trump nominees, and Jennifer Walker Elrod, a George W. Bush nominee. The 5th Circuit, with 17 active judges, is dominated by Republican-nominated judges.

In the years since mifepristone's initial approval, the FDA has extended the time it can be used from seven to 10 weeks of pregnancy, reduced the dosage needed to safely end a pregnancy, eliminated the requirement to visit a doctor in person to get it and allowed pills to be obtained by mail.

Mifepristone is one of two pills used in medication abortions, along with misoprostol. Health care providers have said they could switch to misoprostol if mifepristone is no longer available or is too hard to obtain. Misoprostol is somewhat less effective in ending pregnancies.

HIROSHIMA, Japan (AP) — The symbolism will be palpable when leaders of the world's rich democracies sit down in Hiroshima, a city whose name evokes the tragedy of war, to tackle a host of challenges including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and rising tensions in Asia.

The attention on the war in Europe comes just days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy completed a whirlwind trip to meet many of the Group of Seven leaders now heading to Japan for the summit starting Friday. That tour was aimed at adding to his country's weapons stockpile and building political support ahead of a widely anticipated counteroffensive to reclaim lands occupied by Moscow's forces.

“Ukraine has driven this sense of common purpose” for the G-7, said Matthew P. Goodman, senior vice president for economics at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

He said the new commitments Zelenskyy received just ahead of the summit could push members of the bloc to step up their support even further. “There’s a kind of peer pressure that develops in forums like this,” he explained.

G-7 leaders are also girding for the possibility of renewed conflict in Asia as relations with China deteriorate. They are increasingly concerned, among other things, about what they see as Beijing's growing assertiveness, and fear that China could could try to seize Taiwan by force, sparking a wider conflict. China claims the self-governing island as its own and regularly sends ships and warplanes near it.

The prospect of another nuclear attack has been crystalized by nearby North Korea’s nuclear program and spate of recent missile tests, and Russia's threats to use nuclear weapons in its war in Ukraine. China, meanwhile, is rapidly expanding its nuclear arsenal from an estimated 400 warheads today to 1,500 by 2035, according to Pentagon estimates.

Aminister distanced the Government from Liz Truss on Wednesday stressing she is “a backbencher now” after she sparked a diplomatic row with China by visiting Taiwan.

Roads minister Richard Holden said “we have all move on from that era” after Ms Truss’ brief time as Prime Minister which sparked economic chaos in Britain.

Her visit to Taiwan has been strongly criticised by the Chinese Embassy in London.

Asked about her trip, Mr Holden told Sky News: “Liz is a backbencher now.

“She can go around and say what she likes.”

Pressed on whether her intervention in Taiwan was helpful, he added: “We have all move on from that era now.

“What we want to see is what we have got in Rishi which is a Prime Minister who is concentrating on what the people’s priorities are.”

Asked if people should be taking notice of the ex-PM’s activities, he emphasised: “Let’s concentrate on what we have got now.”

Eva Longoria’s feature directorial debut “Flamin’ Hot” starring Jesse Garcia will open the 2023 Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, announced Wednesday as part of the full festival lineup. This year, the festival will feature over 80 films, 19 world premieres and 100 student films. LALIFF will take place May 31-June 4 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

Longoria’s film is based on the true story of Richard Montañez (Garcia), the Frito Lay janitor who used his Mexican American heritage to turn one snack into a global sensation. Closing the festival is the Los Angeles premiere of Julio Torres’s A24 feature film “Problemista” starring Torres and Tilda Swinton, which tells the story of an aspiring Salvadorian toy maker in New York City and the race against his work visa as he tries to realize his dreams.

Edward James Olmos, co-founder of LALIFF, said, “We kick off our 22nd edition of LALIFF convinced, now more than ever, of the importance of our mission. We are doubling our efforts to build infrastructure for the Latino community in the entertainment industry, while remaining focused on excellence.”

“At a time when our industry is faced with the responsibility of evaluating our commitment to fair practices, LALIFF is proud to offer a safe space for dialogue and the enjoyment of the work by the filmmakers and artists of our community.”

Other highlights include “The Other Shape” by Diego Guzmán, “Charcoal” by Carolina Markowitz, documentary “Patria y Vida: The Power of Music” from Beatriz Lungo and “The Shadow of the Sun” by Miguel Angel Ferrer.

The lineup is divided into features, live-action and animated shorts, episodic works, musical performances, panel discussions and networking sessions. The full program can be found at the festival’s website.

Queen Charlotte is the hottest series on Netflix at the bottom, having been in the top 10 since it landed on the streaming service on 4 May. People love it for its drama, incredible costumes and steamy scenes, but what many people may not have realised is that Queen Charlotte is actually based on a true story.

It’s not made explicitly clear in the main Bridgerton TV series, but in this prequel we’re delving into the life of Queen Charlotte and her husband King George, who you may know from school history lessons as Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and King George III.

See, Bridgerton isn’t just entertainment, sometimes we learn too.

Queen Charlotte - played by India Ria Amartoifio in the series – and ‘Mad’ King George as he was known, ruled over the United Kingdom from 1760 after the death of King George’s grandfather King George II. When King George III died in 1820 at the age of 81, he was succeeded by his son King George IV.

Whilst there is a lot of embellishment surrounding the storyline – think of Queen Charlotte as a 1700s The Crown - much of what we see in the series is accurate. Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz did move from North Germany and marry the king in 1761.

Call ‘Em the Dirty Dozen: The 12 Most Popular Stars in Adult Entertainment

Fame in the adult entertainment industry is a fucking thing. Many performers leave the industry before anyone knows their name. Some experience a meteoric rise, only to fall in the course of a few months. Others prove eternal.

The adult entertainment industry’s annual exposition runs from Jan. 24 to 27 in Las Vegas. Ahead of the event, here is a list of this year’s most popular porn stars as judged by their standing among industry insiders and depth of fan interest, a critical factor to success in the industry.

Those two components can make a tremendous difference when it comes to what performers earn. Globally, pornography is a $97 billion industry, according to Kassia Wosick, assistant professor of sociology at New Mexico State University. Between $10 and $12 billion of that total comes from the United States.

But pay is hardly equal among porn stars. For a typical male/female sex scene, the average actress’s compensation is typically between $800 and $1,000. Top-tier female performers, however, can earn as much as $1,500--and sometimes $2,000 if they’re among the industry’s most sought after. (A newcomer, for comparison, could earn as little as $300.) Male performers, meanwhile, average $500 to $600 per scene or day. Some can pull in $700 to $900, while the most popular male stars earn up to $1,500.

The most popular entertainers supplement these earnings by signing endorsement deals, creating customized videos for fans and, in some cases, launching their own production studios. Some performers leverage their relative fame to dance in adult clubs around the country, where they not only earn considerably more, but can also sell their own merchandise. One performer says she regularly earns between $7,000 and $10,000 per feature dancing appearance, which can last a day or two.

The list below first determines which 25 performers have earned the most nominations in the annual Adult Video News and Xbiz awards, the industry’s two highest-profile ceremonies. From there, a three-month average of the stars’ Trends ranking reveals the 12 highest scoring stars.

A note: You’ll notice that all 12 stars on the list are female. That’s not for lack of trying--male performers were also taken into consideration. Though two men made the top 25 in terms of award nominations this year, they fell off the list once fan popularity was taken into consideration. While the demographic audience for pornography has widened considerably as it has become more readily available, actresses remain the fan favorites, owing to their relative prominence.

    Eva Lovia

Lovia rose to fame like many mainstream celebrities do these days--via a reality show. The winner of DP Star, she was awarded a contract with Digital Playground (that’s the “DP”), meaning she only shot films for that production studio. When that expired, she began shooting for Greg Lansky, owner of three of the fastest growing brand names in the adult industry. (Sales figures for its most viewed titles--or most popular scenes, since full-length features are less common--are closely guarded, per industry norms.) In just three years, though, Lovia has performed in more than 130 productions.

    Abella Danger

Danger, a three-year veteran of the adult entertainment industry, has amassed a large fan base by utilizing social media to promote her brand. She tweets, seemingly hourly, to her more than 500,000 followers, promoting upcoming scenes, products, and details of her life. That direct connection with fans (and their subsequent loyalty) has made Danger one of the most in-demand performers among studios. She was the 2016 winner of AVN’s best new starlet award. This year, she’s up for the female performer of the year honor--the industry’s top prize--from both AVN and Xbiz.

    Romi Rain

Rain has a family history of adult entertainment--her mother once posed in Hustler magazine. Rain got her start as a nude model, eventually moving into the Webcam industry, where models pose and perform acts for fans online for cash tokens. Curiosity about the adult entertainment industry led her to star in her first feature and her fame escalated. Beyond the camera, Rain is a frequent feature dancer around the country and, like many actresses, has been increasingly focused on creating custom content, charging fans $20 per month for exclusive videos. (Based on current subscription numbers, that venture alone brings her an extra $52,00 per year in gross revenue.)

    Lana Rhoades

Another favorite of Lansky, Rhoades is an adult entertainment stars focused on virtual reality. She is a contract performer with Naughty America (one of the genre’s leading outlets), taping VR scenes exclusively for that company as she shoots traditional fare for others. Rhoades built her brand, in part, by appearing in PlayboyPenthouse, and Hustler magazines. She is also an extensive feature dancer. Studios don’t release numbers or best selling information, but Rhoades claims to have had two of the top selling star showcases on Lansky’s platforms.

    Gina Valentina

A relative newcomer to the industry, Valentina was a “trophy girl” at last year’s AVN Awards. That’s not the most progressive of titles, but in the adult entertainment world, it’s a sign that a performer is on the fast track to fame. Accelerating her standing in the industry, Valentina has been signed by the adult industry’s most powerful agent, Mark Spiegler, and has appeared in over 234 films. Unlike many other performers on the list, she relies mostly on on-camera and custom video work for her income, rather than supplementing it with feature dancing or adult novelty endorsements.

    Elsa Jean

Like Gina Valentina, 21-year-old Elsa Jean was an AVN trophy girl and has gone on to perform in 280 films. Perhaps more than any performer on this list, she has fought the existence of social media accounts created by people pretending to be her online--an annoyance for most people, but something that can be damaging for an adult entertainment performer, since studios often favor talent with large followings. A former adult dancer, Jean seemingly has taken a hiatus from that industry and doesn’t work with any Webcam companies--by her own admission, because she is too busy on camera.

    Chanel Preston

Preston has been an industry and fan favorite for years. Beyond being a prolific performer, she hosts the Web series/podcast Sex Think with political activist Rob Nelson, directs films, is a former board member of the Adult Performer Advocacy Committee, or APAC. Preston has also appeared on mainstream programs such as Showtime’s documentary on the adult industry, is a recurring feature dancer around the country, and heavily markets her custom video business on onlyfans.

    Riley Reid

Reid is an eight-year veteran of the adult entertainment industry and one of the most masterful performers when it comes to social media. She has cultivated an online fan base of over 735,000 people by regularly tweeting pictures and videos of herself--usually nude--and holding frequent “ask me anything” sessions on Reddit. Curiously, she doesn’t leverage those fans for custom videos, instead steering them to her own Website, where exclusive scenes can be purchased for $10 and up or fans can subscribe for $35 per month. In 2014, she was named Performer of the Year by Xbiz, which gave her already fast-growing career a big boost. She’s once again up for that same award from both Xbiz and AVN this year, along with 14 other nominations.

    Aidra Fox

Fox was a Penthouse Pet of the Month at age 19, less than a year after getting started in the adult entertainment world. Now 22, she’s up for nine awards this year. In addition to using Twitter and other social media to promote her performances and custom videos (via Patreon), where fans pay $10 per month for photos and $50 per month for all access. She also strives for a personal connection via her (work safe!) YouTube channel, which largely consists of videos of her playing the popular video game series The Sims. She films regularly for most of the major adult studios and has filmed more than 280 scenes through her career.

    Angela White

White is one of the top performers in the industry these days, claiming 18 different award nominations, the most of any person on this list. She also runs and owns her own production company in Australia, her homeland, where she produced her own content. (In 2010, ran for office as a candidate for the Australian Sex Party.) These days, she’s highly sought after in Los Angeles County’s San Fernando Valley, the heart of America’s porn industry, and is active as a Webcam model as well. White is one of the hosts of this year’s AVN Awards, sometimes referred to as the “Oscars of porn.”

    Keisha Grey

Grey has narrowly focused on the celluloid side of the industry throughout her career, which started in 2013. She doesn’t promote feature dance appearances. She hasn’t signed any high profile endorsement deals for adult novelties. And other than her Website (which charges members $30 per month), she doesn’t seem to film custom videos, three of the most popular ways to supplement income in the industry. She has, though, appeared in 389 films to date--and she has a total of seven nominations this year.

    Jessica Drake

Drake, a longtime veteran of the adult entertainment industry, sprung to national fame last year when she was the 11th woman to accuse U.S. president Donald Trump of sexual misconduct. She alleges that Trump offered her $10,000 to join him in his suite in 2006, an accusation he denies. Beyond her role as a performer, Drake is a sex educator, and has released a series of explicit educational films to help couples learn more about sex and discuss it realistically, rather than through the filter of fantasy that most porn films prefer. She also directs adult films, acts as the envoy for Wicked Pictures (one of the top adult studios) around the country, and feature dances in adult clubs around the world.

The Massachusetts Air National Guardsman charged with leaking a trove of military secrets was twice admonished by his superiors last year over "concerning actions" he took with regards to classified information, federal prosecutors said in a court filing on Wednesday.

Jack Teixeira was told by superiors in September and October "to no longer take notes in any form on classified intelligence information" and to "cease-and-desist on any deep dives into classified intelligence information," prosecutors wrote in the filing.

But even after being warned, a superior in February found Teixeira viewing classified materials that were not related to his primary duties, according to a Feb. 4 Air Force memo cited by prosecutors.

Wednesday's filing -- which argues in support of keeping Teixeira behind bars until his trial -- gives further insight into what prosecutors are learning in their investigation of Teixeira's actions leading up to his arrest last month as the alleged source of the massive leak of classified national defense information that has since spread across the internet.

Prosecutors wrote Wednesday that, in January, Teixeira had boasted about the vast amount of classified information he had access to -- writing "theres gonna be a f--- ton of information here . . .," according to one message obtained from the online platform Discord, where Teixeira frequently posted.

MORE: Jack Teixeira: What we know about document leak suspect

Another message, prosecutors argued, made clear Teixeira's "palpable" desire to continue to "obtain and disclose classified information." According to the Wednesday filing, he once wrote, "Man, how f----- up is it i can type out all this s--- and still be ready for more but can barely get through a two page college paper."

And not long after being warned by superiors, he acknowledged online what he was doing, writing in December that he was "breaking a ton of [unauthorized disclosure] regs" but "Idgaf what they say I can or can't share," according to prosecutors' motion.

His pattern of behavior showed "he will be undeterred by any restrictions this Court places upon him and will not hesitate to circumvent those restrictions if he deems it in his interest to do so," prosecutors contended.

"It is clear that the dissemination of the classified national defense information that the Defendant unlawfully posted was even more widespread and diverse than previously known," prosecutors wrote. "It is also clear that the Defendant publicly exalted in the breadth and sensitivity of the information that he was disclosing."

A native of Dighton, Massachusetts, Teixeira has been charged with unauthorized retention and transmission of national defense information as well as willful retention of classified documents, which collectively carry a maximum of 15 years in prison. He has not yet entered a plea.

He was arrested by the FBI on April 13 and is set to appear in court on Friday afternoon when a judge is expected to determine if he should remain detained.

Air Force memos detail previous problems

The government's motion on Wednesday includes several memos that show Air Force officials documenting, in real time over a period of months, their problems with Teixeira's conduct regarding classified information. But it appears the Air Force did nothing to limit his access to such secrets.

One memo dated Sept. 15 states that an official "was made aware that A1C Jack Teixeira of the 102 ISS had been observed taking notes on classified intelligence information ... [and] put the note into his pocket."

"A1C Teixeira has been instructed to no longer take notes in any form on classified intelligence information," the memo continued.

MORE: Prosecutors allege Pentagon leak suspect Jack Teixeira could flee, compare him to Edward Snowden

A second memo, from Oct. 27, stated that "Teixeira was potentially ignoring the cease-and-desist order on deep diving into intelligence information given on 15 Sep 22."

That memo indicated Teixeira was instructed to "continue to cease-and-desist on any deep dives into classified intelligence information and focus on his job as 1D." (The Air Force has said Teixeira worked in Cyber Transport Systems.)

Portions of the September and October memos are redacted, so it is unclear if Teixeira was disciplined in either instance, but he "was offered the opportunity to explore cross training…" and declined the opportunity.

A third memorandum, on Feb. 4, documented that on Jan. 30, Teixeira was observed on a "JWICS" machine, which refers to a secure Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System, "viewing content that was not related to his primary duty and was related to the intelligence field."

    Clash over suspect's character

Teixeira's defense team, for its part, has filed a motion in support of his pre-trial release citing prior cases involving people charged with various offense related to classified information who were permitted to be conditionally released before their trials.

Teixeira's public attorney, Allen Franco, has argued that even if the judge finds that he poses a risk of flight or obstruction, he should still be permitted to remain out of pretrial detention in the custody of his father or confined to a home with the presence of either his father, mother, stepfather, Air Force personnel or his lawyers.

Franco has suggested that Teixeira could have restrictions imposed on him such as location monitoring, barring him from accessing the internet or contacting any potential witnesses in the case and bond that could be secured by both his parents' homes.

Franco also argued that the government has offered "no evidence" that his client ever intended for information shared within the Discord server "to be widely disseminated."

Teixeira's father testified at an April court hearing that he was prepared to serve as a third-party custodian should his son be released. But on Wednesday, prosecutors wrote that such an arrangement couldn't "reasonably" satisfy Teixeira's continued appearance at trial or the public's safety.

Prosecutors and the defense have also advanced competing versions of Teixeira's character. Franco, his lawyer, has pushed back in court papers against the government's detailing of Texeira's suspension during his sophomore year in high school over allegations he made violent and racist threats.

The incident "was thoroughly investigated" at the time, Franco wrote, and Teixeira was allowed to return to school after a "handful" of days following a psychiatric evaluation.

Teixeira's lawyer disputed that he'd be a flight risk by pointing to how, when Teixeira became aware of his impending arrest, he sat on his mother's porch and read a Bible as he waited for law enforcement to arrive. (Teixeira also wore a long rosary necklace to a late-April court hearing.)

In Wednesday's filing, however, prosecutors wrote their ongoing investigation had found evidence that "belies the Defendant's efforts to minimize his criminal conduct and undercuts the Defendant's claim that he can be trusted to adhere to conditions of release imposed by the Court."

Prosecutors dismissed the defense's "narrative" about Teixeira's character.

"Among the conduct that could be contrasted with what the defense alleged to be the Defendant's peaceful reading of the Bible prior to his arrest is a recent video that has now been publicly published by The Washington Post," prosecutors wrote. "That video depicts the Defendant using racial and ethnic slurs while firing at a target, 'emptying the magazine of bullets' and ending his statement with 'I mag dump.'"

Prosecutors further pointed to what they called "the significant volume of racist, antisemitic, and violent rhetoric [Teixeira] posted online."

In sum, they wrote, Teixeira's "true nature" is "one of self-serving deceit."

The first full-size digital scan of the Titanic has revealed the world’s most famous shipwreck as never seen before, and experts hope that it will provide more insight into how the liner came to sink in 1912.

Created using deep-sea mapping, the unique 3D view of the entire vessel could break through “a century’s worth of human interpretation” about what happened to the liner as it made its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York, Parks Stephenson, a Titanic analyst and historian, told NBC News on Wednesday.

The new scan “blew me away,” said Stephenson, who was asked to assess the image. He added that it was a “major step to driving the narrative of the Titanic towards evidence-based, scientific research and not speculation.”

The scan was carried out last summer by Magellan, a deep-sea mapping company, and Atlantic Productions, which is making a documentary about the project.

Atlantic Productions said on its website that specially adapted cameras had been used “to produce footage and stills of the Titanic wreck as never been seen before.”

“Using the submersible camera systems, the team performed dedicated photogrammetry passes on the wreck, allowing highly accurate and photoreal 3D models of RMS Titanic to be produced,” it said.

Photogrammetry involves taking overlapping photographs of an object, structure or space, and converting them into 2D or 3D digital models.

More than 1,500 people died when the Titanic went down and it was long assumed to have sunk in one piece.

It was only after the wreck was discovered in 1985, around 350 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, that it was found to have broken up. Surrounded by debris, the ship’s two main pieces are around 2,000 feet apart.

While footage has been taken of the wreck, Stephenson — who serves as the executive director of the ship and museum USS Kidd  — said submersible cameras “only see small portions of the wreck site at any given moment.”

Previously, he said, people filled in the gaps by referring back to what the Titanic looked like as a whole ship, “so as you paint the ship or try to build a model of it, it’s going to have a bias to how it originally looked.”

“It will be accurate but you’ll tend to make it more complete than it actually is,” he said.

The wreck has never been seen in such detail. (Atlantic Productions / Magellan)

The new scan was “devoid of that,” he said, adding, “It is completely based on data and not human interpretation and that is why we are now seeing it in its larger context for the first time ever.”

Atlantic Productions said “one major area of deterioration” had already been observed in the officers' quarters. “This included the room of Captain Edward John Smith and discovered that the iconic captain’s bathtub has now disappeared from view,” it added.

“Now we’re getting objective, so we can get really serious with the science of understanding the wreck,” Stephenson said.

    Montana officially bans TikTok

By Tiffany Moustakas, Editor at LinkedIn News

Montana has become the first U.S. state to ban TikTok, prohibiting the app from operating within the state and making it unavailable to download in app stores, due to alleged security concerns. Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte signed the new law Wednesday, following the state's legislative approval of the ban last month; it will take effect on Jan. 1, 2024. TikTok parent ByteDance said the bill “infringes on the First Amendment rights” of Montana's residents, and it will defend its users’ rights in and out of the state.

    • While it will be considered unlawful for Google and Apple to offer TikTok in Montana, the state will "not impose any penalties on individuals using the app," Reuters notes.
    • Several states have barred workers from using TikTok on public devices, but this statewide ban is the first of its kind.

He added that he was “absolutely convinced,” that the photogrammetry model would now be used “not just for Titanic, but for all underwater exploration,” because it “ushers in a new phase of exploration and analysis.”

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A U.S. judge is set on Wednesday to formally mete out a life sentence to the Uzbek man convicted of killing eight people and injuring dozens more in a 2017 attack in which he drove a rented truck down a New York City bike path crowded with cyclists and pedestrians.

Twenty-five people who survived the attack and family members of people who died are scheduled to speak during a hearing in federal court in Manhattan before U.S. District Judge Vernon Broderick imposes the sentence on Sayfullo Saipov, convicted in January of murder and terrorism charges.

The sentence of life in prison without parole became automatic in the case after a jury deadlocked on whether Saipov, 35, should receive the death penalty.

Saipov used a Home Depot rental truck to mow down people on a path along the Hudson River on Manhattan's West Side, according to prosecutors. He had hoped to the attack would help him gain membership in Islamic State, or ISIS, they said. The United States designates ISIS as a terrorist organization.

Many of the people killed or injured were foreign nationals visiting the most populous U.S. city. Most of the people scheduled to speak at the hearing are traveling from Argentina and Belgium. Each speaker will have about five minutes to address the court and, if needed, will have an interpreter, according to prosecutors.

It was unclear whether Saipov will address the court during the proceeding. He is expected to be housed at Colorado's Supermax facility, the most secure U.S. federal prison. There he is due to spend 22 or 23 hours a day alone in a cell with a concrete bed.

Saipov's case was the first federal death penalty trial since President Joe Biden, a Democrat, took office in 2021 after pledging during his campaign to abolish capital punishment in federal cases.

Italian politicians have voiced their determination to see both Imola and Monza remain on the F1 calendar for the long term.

As the home of Ferrari, the sport’s most recognisable institution, Italy has long been regarded as a key F1 heartland but has faced a battle to keep hosting the races in recent times.

The spiritual home of the Italian Grand Prix, Monza’s existing deal is set to expire in 2025 having fought with former F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone for many years to retain its place on the schedule.

Meanwhile, Imola went 14 years without a race after sliding off the calendar at the end of 2006 and only returned in the autumn of 2020 during the truncated pandemic-affected campaign.

The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix reassumed a more traditional April slot in 2021/22 and was scheduled to host the sixth round of the 2023 season this weekend before severe storms forced the event’s cancellation.

Speaking ahead of the news of the cancellation, Matteo Salvini, Italy’s vice president of the council of ministers, is certain there is a place for both tracks on the F1 schedule.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he said: “The GPs mean work, tourism, beauty, identity, tradition, research, innovation and are symbols of wealth and jobs which, at a time like this, are sacred: the goal is to secure both Imola and Monza, which absolutely must coexist.”

With sustainability a growing consideration for governments in today’s world, the call for Italy to keep staging two grands prix for year may raise eyebrows.

But Mr Salvini is unmoved in his view that Imola and Monza are both worth having.

“The challenges of sustainability are perfectly fine but the roar of engines, the beautiful ones that annoy some, are irreplaceable” he added.

“Good luck to all the operators that, in these particularly complicated weeks for these areas, they never stopped working for a minute.

“As a minister and as a ministry we are here, not only with the €5million that we financially give as content, but above all as cultural support.”

Antonio Tajani, the minister of foreign affairs and international co-operation, voiced his support of the plan, insisting F1 can assist tourism in Italy and promote the image of a vibrant and successful nation.

He said: “The strong international appeal of F1 makes Italy an extraordinary promotion abroad and support is a government priority because it gives a dynamic, creative and winning image of the country.”

While Imola’s 2023 race may have fallen, Monza remains set to welcome fans for the Italian Grand Prix on September 3.

Billionaire Elon Musk underlined his views on remote work in no uncertain terms this week, declaring that working from home is "morally wrong."

The Tesla founder and Twitter owner, who has claimed to work seven days a week, said in an interview with CNBC's David Faber that employees are more productive in person. But he also expressed disdain for white-collar employees who work from home on class grounds, with most service employees required to do their job on site.

"There are some exceptions, but I kinda think the whole notion of work-from-home is a bit like the fake Marie Antoinette quote, 'Let them eat cake,'" he said. "You're going to make people who make your food that gets delivered [that] can't work from home; the people that come fix your house, they cant work from home, but you can?"

"Does that seem morally right? That's messed up," Musk said.

Musk also took aim at bosses who work from home while overseeing employees who must show up in person to do their jobs, calling them out of touch and hypocritical for "asking everyone else to not work from home while they do."

"It's messed up to assume that, yes, they have to go to work but you don't. It's not just a productivity thing, I think it's morally wrong," he told CNBC.

Many large employers in the U.S. and abroad have settled on hybrid work models, recognizing that employees prize flexibility and enjoy the time and cost savings that come from not having to commute to an office.

    Laptop "la-la land"

Musk highlighted the distinction between office workers and those whose jobs can only be performed on a factory floor, like auto workers.

"The laptop class is living in la-la land. As I said, look at the cars. Are people working from home here? Of course not," Musk said.

Not surprisingly, the Tesla, Space X, and until recently Twitter CEO requires that his employees show up for work in person.

Musk said he himself works almost every day, taking just two to three days off per year.

"I work seven days a week, but I'm not expecting others to do that," he said.

    • Alexandra Cosoff works for Emirates
    • Doesn't pay tax or for rent

An Australian flight attendant has revealed her very generous compensation package from Emirates, which includes a tax-free salary and free accommodation.

While on paper Alexandra Cosoff only makes $A5000 a month, her salary is completely tax free.

She also has full medical, dental cover as well as perks like transport and laundry provided by the company, meaning her whole salary is spent on fun things like 'travelling the world'.

The 33-year-old from Queensland's Sunshine Coast lives in Dubai, where workers pay no income tax.

Her basic monthly salary is 430 Emirati Dirham (AED) - about $A1800 - but she also gets an extra AED 63.75 ($A26) for every hour she flies.

On average, she flies 80 to 100 hours a month, with meal allowances added for night stops.

This means she gets an average of around $A5000 a month if she flies in economy, and even more for when she works in first class and and business class.

As such, she takes home a minimum of around $A60,000 a year,  about the same amount as a worker in Australia on $78,000 paying income tax.

But she pays nothing for basic living expenses.

'We are very well looked after,' Alexandra told news.com.au.

She explained that she spends most of her money on fun things like travelling as she doesn't have hefty tax, rent, and utility bills like she wold in Australia.

'I live in my own apartment. You can either get company-provided accommodation or opt for accommodation allowance.'

Jimmy Kimmel had his monologue interrupted Monday night by breaking news; after 20 years, ABC has decided to part ways with the late-night host.

Related: Fox News Viewers Blame Disney For Tucker Carlson Termination

The breaking news came just moments after Jimmy Kimmel mentioned the termination of Fox News host Tucker Carlson and  CNN’s Don Lemon. Mid-sentence, it cuts to Kimmel’s sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez, who delivers the news.

“We have some breaking news,” said Guillermo. “After 20 years on the air, ABC TV has decided to part ways with its host, Jimmy Kimmel.” Guillermo added, “On a personal note, I’d like to say to Jimmy, don’t let the door hit you in your ass on the way out.”

    Credit: ABC

Obviously, it was just a hilarious joke that mimicked the real breaking news from earlier that day. Both Carlson and Lemon’s termination came as a surprise to both their colleagues and viewers. And while the networks claimed they were mutual decisions, Kimmel alluded to the fact that Carlson ended his last show on Friday with “We’ll be back on Monday,” being completely unaware that he would be terminated before then.

It is, however, a bit ironic to make fun of Tucker Carlson being let go from Fox News when the ABC network is a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company and is also currently firing employees. So while this was only a funny bit, it should be considered a little too close to home for the staff at ABC.

Disney has already let go several executives at ABC News earlier this month, and with more layoffs coming throughout the week, there could be more staff at the network to be laid off. EPSN has also seen several significant layoffs at the company as well.
